    U.S. Department of State has partnered with Synaptic Digital to bring you an aggregation of U.S. multimedia materials, news releases, high resolution photography, HD and SD video, and links to related material on the U.S. Department of State website. Links are also provided to U.S. Department of State RSS feeds and YouTube Channels.

  • Why is some content showcased in a multimedia panel that appears over the page while clicking other content takes me to a new page?

    For each story in State On Demand, we've chosen the best option to showcase the information and multimedia content within it. Usually, stories with a lot of information (supporting text, press releases, supporting documents, etc.) are shown on their own page so that you can get a full and detailed view of what is available. Stories that consist of mostly multimedia content are better displayed in the multimedia panel.

  • I am interested in a piece of content in State On Demand. What are some of the ways that I can fully experience it?

    When the multimedia panel showcases a piece of content, it offers you a full range of viewing options, complete with a full screen option and a slideshow capability for images. You can even move your mouse over the player window to browse through related content in different types of media.

    In addition to these features, you will see one or more options to interact with the currently featured content. These options are listed here with a brief description of what they do.

    1. Download it | Click "Download", tell us a bit about yourself, and then go ahead and download the available content in your preferred file format(s).
    2. Share it | Click the icon of your favorite social networking and bookmarking sites to share the content with your friends.
    3. Embed it | Click "Embed" to obtain the code needed to show the featured content on your blog or website.
    4. Get more info | Click "More Info" to learn more about the content and see related media.

  • What is RSS and how can I use it?

    The RSS feed delivers you real-time information for brand new content on the site. Simply click the RSS button in the Latest News section to subscribe.

    We offer options to let you automatically subscribe to a feed via the Google Reader, your Yahoo home page, and MSN RSS Reader:

  • Why do I see the "Get ADOBE FLASH PLAYER" button when I click a piece of content to showcase it?

    Seeing this button just means that you don't have the required Flash player plugin installed in your browser. Clicking this button will guide you to the trusted AdobeTMsite where you can follow simple steps to install the plugin.

  • How can I access broadcast quality video?

    All stories in State On Demand will indicate both the quantity and formats (streaming, SD and HD) of the available video files available. If you'd like to view ONLY the broadcast quality video files available on the site, simply click on "LOOKING FOR BROADCAST QUALITY VIDEO?" on State On Demand home page. Alternatively, if you click on "Advanced Search" at the top of the right-hand navigation panel, you can specify which video formats you'd like to search for in the "Articles Containing" search control box.

  • How do I download files?

    Click on the piece of content you would like to download. This will open the multimedia panel which will feature the selected content. Click the "Download" button, tell us a bit about yourself, and then go ahead and click one of the available file format(s). This will activate the Synaptic Digital Download Manager and start your download.

  • What is the Synaptic Digital Download Manager?

    The Synaptic Digital Download Manager organizes and tracks the files you download from any site powered by Synaptic Digital. For each file being downloaded, the Download Manager displays the file's name and size, the time remaining before completion, the location where the file was downloaded from, and the date of the download. The Download Manager will keep a history of your downloads until you click CLEAR COMPLETE as described below.

    The Download Manager window will appear every time you download a video, image, or audio file from any site powered by Synaptic Digital.

  • What are the system requirements for the Download Manager?

  • What can I do with the Download Manager?

    In addition to keeping information about all of your downloads in one place, the Download Manager window has the following features:

    • PAUSE ALL: Use this option to pause all active downloads..

    • RESUME ALL: This feature resumes all paused downloads.

    • CLEAR COMPLETE: If you'd like to remove the records of all completed or cancelled downloads, click the CLEAR COMPLETE button on the top control bar.

    • Open the file: When a download has finished, you can double-click on the file to open it.

    • Pause pause : You can pause an individual download that is currently being downloaded by clicking the Pause button
    beside the file. Pausing a download allows you to give priority and bandwidth to other downloads so they can complete sooner.

    • Cancel close : This feature allows you to interrupt and cancel downloading for a specific file.

  • How do I install the Download Manager?

    Select your browser / operating system combination from the list below for help on how to install the Download Manager.

    Installation on Firefox / Windows


    Step 1: After clicking the link to install the Download Manager, you will see this dialogue window:

    Step 2: After clicking "Save File", the Firefox Downloads window will appear:

    Step 3: Once the file is completely downloaded, double-click it to start the Installer:

    Step 4: Clicking "Run" will begin the install process.

    Once installation is complete, the Download Manager will open in your browser window and your first file will start downloading.

    Installation on Google Chrome / Windows

    Step 1: The first time you attempt to download a file using the Download Manager, your browser will automatically prompt you to save the file. The message will appear at the bottom left corner of your window.

    Step 2: After clicking "Save", the file will download. Once it has completed, you'll see the file ready for you to access. Click on the name of the file to begin the installation."

    Step 3: After clicking this you'll be asked if you want to run the file to start the installation:

    Once installation completes, the Download Manager will open in your browser window and your first file will start downloading.

    Step 1: After clicking the link to install the Download Manager, you will see this dialogue window:

    Step 2: Click "Run". You will see the security dialog asking if you'd like to run the file:

    Step 3: Simply click "Run" and the Install process will begin :

    Step 1: After clicking the link to install the Download Manager, you will see this dialogue window:

    Once the file is completely downloaded, double-click it to start the Installer. When installation completes, the Download Manager will open in your browser window and your first file will start downloading.

    Installation on Firefox / Mac OSX

    Step 1: After clicking the link to install the Download Manager, you will see this dialogue window:

  • What if the Download Manager installs, but the file I want to download never starts?

    You will know that the Download Manager has installed correctly when you are prompted for a location to save the file you originally wanted to download. If this does not happen, do the following:

    1. Navigate back to the desired file in your browser and download the file again.
    2. Leave the browser window open until the download successfully completes.
    3. If the download fails a second time, contact us for help.

  • What if the Download Manager installs and the download starts, but it pauses or hangs up?

    Try the following:

    1. Uninstall the Download manager (links to the section below)
    2. Delete the Resume Download shortcut from the desktop, if it's there.
    3. Navigate to the folder where you saved the application's files and delete any temporary files ending in ".part".
    4. Go back and again click to download your desired media file.
    5. Go through the steps to reinstall the Download Manager.
    6. Leave the Download Manager window open until the download successfully completes

  • How do I uninstall the Download Manager?

    • Windows XP:Choose Start > Control Panel > Add Or Remove Programs. Select "Akamai NetSession Interface" and click Remove.

    • Windows Vista/Windows 7:  Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs And Features. Select "Akamai NetSession Interface" and click Uninstall.

    • Mac OS: Drag the Download Manager from the Applications folder to the Trash.
